This blog started by documenting my venture into “surfmoto”, which is the name I’m giving to using a motorcycle for surf travel. Since traveling for surf usually means going to remote beaches, the emphasis here is on preparing for off-road travel, especially a long way from home or much support.
It’s evolved into, well, surf and moto stuff. When I get around to it, that is. It’s just more interesting to do than to document.
I live in Los Angeles, California. I’ve surfed since I was 15, which was the same year I got my first motorcycle. After a lifetime of surfing and riding bikes, and knowing that one doesn’t get many lifetimes, I figured I could make the most of this one by combining these two loves into one joyful pursuit. No more trading off.
When I started this thing I could find very little info on mixing surf and motorcycles. It’s since become a thing. I had nothing to do with it. It just happened. I’m glad it did.
Ride on!
Hi Mike,
I’m in Playa next door to you. I have a ’73 RD350 and am going to put a rack on it for my fish. Thanks for the tips. I have some means of fabrication if it ever comes to it. I’ll keep up with your blog. Keep grippin’ and slippin’!

Hey Tim – I thought I replied to this awhile ago, but there’s nothing here. Sorry man! Anyhow, can I get a shot of how the surfing’ RD turned out? Did it work?
Best,
Mike
Hi Mike,
I live next door in Playa and am searching for a good rack for my ’73 RD350. Thanks for the tips. I have some fabrications means, plasma cutting and tig welding, so may have to go custom. I’ll be following the blog, man. Keep grippin and slippin!
Tim
Hey Tim – Sorry for the delayed response. Had to get on to work-related stuff, but getting back in the saddle again.
Cool as hell – a 73 RD350. Man, I’m jealous! Would love to hear how that project has come along.
Do you have any blog post about building a surfboard rack. I just got a Honda Crf250l and living in Costa Rica.
Just what I put on this SurfMoto blog. I didn’t really build this one. I bought the parts – the tail rack and the Carver Motorcycle Rack.
